Things To See In San Juan, Puerto Rico | Architecture, Landmarks, Murals
Architecture
One of the things I love most about traveling is admiring the architecture, and many of the places i’ve visited have shared similar structure and design in that it’s Spanish architecture and some Moorish design as well.
There’s such a stark difference between the aesthetic of the Caribbean and how houses and buildings look in America, so I spend a lot of time admiring the use of color and some of the other textural elements present in the architecture.
Landmarks & Landscapes
Castles
Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristobal are the two 16th century castles in Old San Juan. They’re built in ideal positions that allow for great views and photos right along the water. They are both considered national historic sites for which you have to pay to enter. It’s about $10, but if you’d rather not pay then the experience from the surrounding area can be just as fulfilling.
La Perla
La Perla is a small neighborhood in San Juan of close to 400 people. Though small in size, it’s known by name and has established a presence in the media having hosted several music video shoots like the one for popular song “Despacito.” It’s not exactly necessary to go down into the neighborhood if you’re just sightseeing, but you will see the refurbished basketball court by Carmelo Anthony and a building that shows Puerto Rican pride through and through.
Murals & Statues
There is a pretty substantial mural culture in Puerto Rico worth seeing, especially because many of the works of art are also political statements. A look at these murals can give you a glimpse into some of the history and pride of the city, and more importantly the voice of the people who live there. I captured just a few of them here, but you’ll find many more spectacular murals across San Juan, some ideal to snap a selfie in front of.
