Sacco Pizza Is That Girl When It Comes to a Slice and a Coke | New York

After leaving a performance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, I was just so…hungry. The thing I always appreciate about a city like New York that’s different from home is that if you’re the urgent kind of hungry, the city will deliver you a meal immediately that gets the job done.

Roughly 200 feet from the theater, I spotted Sacco Pizza, a classic no-nonsense pizzeria, which was obviously the best solution for my hunger. Now i’m not a New Yorker, so I hesitated at the counter, unsure of ordering etiquette. It seemed like the kind of place you just yell out an order and believe they heard you, but I wasn’t positive. It was unmistakably an extremely Italian restaurant with faded photos on the wall and the single man behind the counter operating the entire place himself.

I stood there for a bit until he finally said, “Whenever you’re ready,” without stopping what he was doing, which was taking the most delicious looking pizza out of the oven.

Here’s where I have a confession: I said the perfect place for a slice and a Coke, but I meant two slices, because that’s what I had. Pepperoni, of course.

I grabbed one of four tables in the back of the restaurant and sat with my tray. The first bite was just so crispy, cheesy, and the perfect amount of grease. It hit exactly where I needed it to. It wasn’t fancy. It wasn’t reinventing the wheel, but it was perfect. It was comfort in its purest, most New York form.

That’s what I love about New York: you can walk into a place you’ve never heard of, spend a couple of bucks, and be completely blown away. The best food there just many not come with a reservation or have an Instagrammable look. Sometimes it’s just two slices and a Coke after a night at the theater, reminding you that a slice of pizza can feel like heaven when you need it most and probably just a few steps away from wherever you might find yourself in the city.
