Top 7 Chicago Experiences You Can’t Miss

Chicago is really a vibe and somewhere you can go many times and never have the same experience. Like every city, there are just some things you absolutely must do while visiting. Here are the top seven I recommend based on what I enjoyed most.

1. GRab a photo at Cloud Gate in millennium park

I’m sure you’ve seen “The Bean” before, perhaps in a movie or on social media. Constructed between 2004 and 2006, it is one of the most iconic spots in the city. If you’re already on your way to the Art Institute or for a walk through Millennium Park, grab a few photos here for memories’ sake.

2. Ride the ferris wheel or see fireworks at Navy Pier

What is Chicago without Navy Pier? In the summer, it’s the perfect family activity where you can shop, eat, and have a bit of fun. I’ve been to Chicago several times, but 2024 was the first time I was able to experience the city in the summer. There’s a stark difference in the number of people hanging out at Navy Pier over the summer as opposed to the fall or winter. Over the summer, they do a 10-minute firework show over the river that is also an unforgettable experience.

3. See timeless artwork at the Art Institute of Chicago

The Art Institute has some truly amazing artwork that you absolutely must see if you are an art lover or museum goer like me. Nighthawks by Edward Hopper is a standout and really quite remarkable to see in person. I also loved seeing the work of a couple Black artists like Walter Ellison (Train Station) and Jacob Lawrence (The Wedding). You can spend a few hours here visiting the permanent collection or rotating special exhibits like Georgia O’Keeffe: “My New Yorks” (Summer 2024).

4. See a broadway show at James M. Nederlander Theatre

On my very first trip to Chicago, I happened to stay right next to the Nederlander Theatre, and surprise! It was opening night of “Wicked.” I absolutely loved the show and always check to see what shows are upcoming whenever I visit. Of course, there are other theaters in the theater district, so it’s worth browsing around to see what’s playing elsewhere too.

6. River Architecture Tour

I’ve done the river architecture tour twice now and enjoyed the second experience equally as much as the first. If you’ve been walking around the city all day, then it’s nice to have a seat and catch a breeze on the water while learning about the history of this beautiful city. To me, the architecture is part of what makes the city so stunning and of course contributes to the incomparable skyline.

7. try the hot dog ice cream at the Museum of Ice Cream

You have to try it just once. I regret to say the flavor of the hot dog ice cream is not nearly as off putting as the idea of hot dog ice cream sounds. Even if you don’t want to try it, the Museum of Ice Cream is still a fun place to visit and of course a cute photo opportunity. You also get several other ice cream treats so I suggest arriving with an empty stomach.
