Why Everyone’s Lining Up for Pappy & Harriet’s | Joshua Tree, California

Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace is a restaurant right outside of Joshua Tree, and it is an experience. When I think of a roadside saloon from back in the day, this is what i’d imagine. You can hear live music here, but it’s also an unexpected and legendary culinary gem that has earned a reputation as one of the most recommended restaurants in the high desert.

I arrived just before opening and was surprised to see a crowd gathered outside that seemed like both locals and travelers all waiting for a table. Fortunately, I had made a reservation, which they no longer take, and when 5:00 p.m. hit, I was the first person through the doors. I like to think those in line behind me were jealous.

I kept it classic with a chili dog, paired with red rice and a generous plate of cheese fries to start. Complimentary chips and salsa rounded out the table, and everything hit the spot. This is the restaurant that singlehandedly made me like ranch dressing on fries and chives on hot dogs. It’s comfort food done right with a smoky, home-cooked flavor, and that sort of simplicity is what I loved about it.

The saloon-style, rustic decor has a warm and familiar feeling, which is made better by doors that open out onto a patio and waiting area for those desperate for a table. Even if you’re just grabbing drinks, you’re in for a good time. Most nights, the restaurant features live music on their indoor stage, and you likely won’t know the artist performing, but that adds to the charm. After dining here, it’s clear why people line up every evening just to get inside—it’s a vibe.
