Exploring the Magic of the Pacific Coast Highway: What Is So Special About It?

The Pacific Coast Highway, also known as State Route or Highway 1, is a legendary road trip, in my humble opinion. That would explain why it makes the list of most traveled road trips every year. Stretching along the stunning coastline of California, this destination is truly something like a dream. From its unmatched landscapes and hidden location gems to the movie-like scenes and carefree vibe, the Pacific Coast Highway is an adventure you must take at least once in your lifetime.

Unmatched Landscapes

One of the most captivating things about the Pacific Coast Highway is the landscapes. From start to finish, you encounter breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, soaring cliffs, and rugged mountains. If you like coastal towns, there is no shortage of them each offering its own unique charm and character; you’ll definitely want to stop at places like Malibu, Big Sur, and Monterey among many others, and you’re guaranteed to want to take a photo everywhere you look. Check out my list of 19 Things To See and Do From LA to Big Sur.

Hidden Location Gems

Along the Pacific Coast Highway, there are infinite hidden location gems, some that may already be mapped out on your itinerary and others you may just happen across as you go. Bixby Bridge is an iconic stop in Big Sur that many people recognize, but it’s important on a trip like this to keep your eyes peeled for locations that are not so known. I happened across Cachuma Lake and Mcway Falls, both stunning stops off the beaten path that were not in my original plans. The secret spots you may come across add an element of mystery and spontaneity to the trip that you don’t always get at every destination, and they’re absolutely extraordinary sights to see.

Movie-Like and Carefree Vibes

We rented a convertible expressly for this road trip because it felt like something we were supposed to do. It was a bit chilly for part of the trip, but when the sun was warm and high, driving up the coast with the wind in my hair, the sound of nature, and the endless blue horizon allowed me to experience the kind of carefree vibe you think you’d only ever see in movies. Being on the open road and solely concerned with taking in everything around you in the present moment is liberating and one of the absolute best parts of taking any road trip.

The Pacific Coast Highway road trip is the best way to experience the incredible wonder of California's coastline. There is no shortage of sights to see and things to do, and it’s a thrill to go place to place and moment to moment being awed by the natural beauty right here in the United States.
